Every Generation of International Is Still Working in Houston
Drive the industrial corridors east of the city and you will pass a 2011 ProStar with a MaxxForce 13 pulling containers off the port approach roads, a 2019 LT Series running regional lanes, an HV dump truck on a jobsite in Highlands, and an MV box truck making deliveries in Channelview. Four International trucks. Four completely different diagnostic paths, three different software packages, and parts that do not interchange.

The MaxxForce Years, and Why 2013 Is the Line That Matters
For the EPA 2010 emissions standard, Navistar took a different bet from every other manufacturer: heavy exhaust gas recirculation alone, with no SCR and no DEF tank. On paper it meant one less system to fill and maintain. In practice the bet did not hold, and the engines ended up at the centre of a class action that Navistar settled for $135 million.
What is useful for an owner is that the failures were specific, not random. A connector on the turbo air control valve worked loose under hood vibration and wore its own pins down through fretting, which let the engine overfuel and smoke. The EGR valve shaft failed and let unfiltered soot into the cooler and the exhaust manifold. Fuel economy dropped and trucks came off the road.
By 2013 the fixes were in production: the turbo valve connection hardwired, the EGR valve shaft roughly a third thicker with the sharp internal edges removed, the EGR cooler redesigned. From around 2015 the N13 shipped with SCR aftertreatment. So a 2011 MaxxForce 13 and a 2014 MaxxForce 13 are not the same engine to work on — and a shop that treats them as one will keep replacing the same cooler every season.
- Confirm the build date and whether the 2013-era EGR and turbo updates were ever applied — many were done under warranty, many were not
- Test the turbo air control valve circuit before condemning the turbo itself
- Pressure-test the EGR cooler instead of replacing it on symptoms alone
- Inspect the exhaust manifold and cooler for soot loading, which tells you what the EGR valve has been doing
- Read the regen history before anyone touches the DPF
What Brings Internationals Into Our Bay
Six patterns account for most of the International work we see in Houston. Five are mechanical or electrical. The sixth is the local road tax.
EGR cooler and turbo control faults
Coolant disappearing with no puddle under the truck, white smoke at idle, and a derate that comes and goes. On MaxxForce engines this is the first place we look, and the order of testing matters more than the parts.
DPF loading and failed regens
Port drayage and short industrial runs never get the exhaust hot enough to complete a regen. The filter is usually a symptom, not the cause — we look at duty cycle and regen history before quoting a filter.
Injector sleeve and cup leaks
A known failure path on the MaxxForce 11 and 13: coolant works past the injector sleeve and into the cylinder. The tell is coolant loss with a clean engine bay and no external leak anywhere.
Diamond Logic faults
International's multiplexed electrical system shares data across a network instead of running a wire per switch. A dash symptom can originate in a body module, so chasing the wire that misbehaves is usually the wrong move. See our electrical services.
DEF dosing and SCR derates
On the N13, A26 and S13 the derate usually traces to a NOx sensor, the dosing valve, or DEF quality rather than to the engine. Reading which sensor disagrees with which is faster than replacing both.
Front end, steering and suspension

Find Out Which Engine You Actually Have First
International has run an unusually wide engine roster over two decades. In medium duty, the DT466 and the MaxxForce DT. In between, the MaxxForce 7, 9, 10, 11, 13 and 15, then the N13. From 2017, the in-house A26 at 12.4 litres. From 2023, the S13 Integrated Powertrain, which is also the platform International has confirmed for EPA 2027. Alongside all of those, Cummins ISX and X15 in Class 8 and Cummins L9 and B6.7 in medium duty and vocational.
This is not trivia. Two ProStars from the same model year can carry a MaxxForce 13 or a Cummins X15, and from the very first step the fault tree, the diagnostic software and the parts are different. When you call, the engine matters more than the model — and if you do not know it, we will find it from the VIN before anyone starts guessing.

Not every International fault needs a bay. A DEF dosing fault, a sensor, a Diamond Logic module that has dropped off the network, a regen that will not initiate — those are often solvable where the truck is parked, and we would rather come to you than have you pay for a tow you did not need.
When the repair does need a lift, a press or the full toolset — injector sleeves, an EGR cooler, a turbo, front-end work — the truck comes to 13404 Wallisville Rd and we tell you plainly why it had to. What we do not do is defeat an emissions system to make a code go away. It is illegal, and it leaves you with a truck that cannot pass inspection or be sold.

Frequently Asked Questions
My MaxxForce keeps losing coolant but I can't find a leak. What is it usually?
Coolant going somewhere with a clean engine bay usually means it is going inside the engine or out the exhaust. The two common paths on MaxxForce engines are a cracked or corroded EGR cooler and, on the 11 and 13, coolant working past an injector sleeve into the cylinder. Both are diagnosable before anything comes apart — pressure-testing the cooler and checking which cylinders are affected tells us which one it is. What we would not do is replace the cooler on the symptom alone and hand the truck back.
Is a pre-2013 MaxxForce worth repairing, or should I be looking at a different truck?
It depends almost entirely on one thing: whether the 2013-era updates were ever applied to that specific engine. Navistar hardwired the turbo valve connection, thickened the EGR valve shaft and redesigned the cooler, and a lot of trucks got those updates under warranty while others never did. An updated engine with good service history can be worth keeping. One that has been fighting the same fault for years, with a soot-loaded manifold and no records, often is not. We will tell you which one you have before you spend money on it.
Can you work on the Diamond Logic electrical system, or does that have to go to a dealer?
We work on it. The thing that makes Diamond Logic difficult is not access, it is the approach: because modules share data across a network instead of each switch having its own wire, the place the symptom shows up is frequently not the place the fault lives. A dash warning can trace back to a body module or an upfit that was wired into the network years after the truck was built. We diagnose the network rather than chasing individual wires, which is what stops the same fault coming back.
My International is in a derate. Can you clear it and get me moving?
We can diagnose it and repair the cause, and on the N13, A26 and S13 the cause is often a NOx sensor, a dosing valve or DEF quality rather than the engine itself — which means the truck can frequently be moving the same day. What we will not do is delete or defeat the emissions system to silence the code. It is illegal, it puts the truck out of compliance for inspection, and it destroys the resale value. If someone quotes you that as a fix, that is what they are selling you.
Do you work on medium-duty Internationals, or only Class 8?
Both. Alongside the Class 8 tractors we service the MV and DuraStar 4300 with DT466, MaxxForce DT and Cummins engines, the HX and HV vocational trucks, and WorkStar chassis. Medium-duty Internationals often carry Cummins L9 or B6.7 engines rather than an International engine, so tell us the engine when you call and we will have the right diagnostic path ready.
Do I need to know which engine my truck has before I call?
It helps, but no. Give us the VIN and we will identify the engine, the build date and the emissions configuration from it. That matters more on International than on most makes, because the same model year can hold a MaxxForce, an N13, an A26 or a Cummins, and the diagnostic path splits at the first step. If you have the engine data plate handy, a photo of it is even faster.
